John has been in the construction industry since 1988. In 1997, he incorporated the J. Tillman Group.
As a Class A General Contractor License holder for decades, John has maintained a consistent high-standard of excellence.
During his first twenty years, John worked as a tradesman, designer, and general contractor, building firsthand a robust base of knowledge while mastering numerous trades at a professional level. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for his expertise.
Collaborating directly with governing jurisdictions on every project—from HOAs and Architectural Review Committees to cities, counties, states, and the Army Corps of Engineers—deepened his understanding of and respect for regulatory frameworks, enhancing his experience and credibility.
John’s diverse portfolio sets him apart from most residential general contractors. While residential construction remains our primary focus, our completion of numerous commercial and municipal projects has enriched our depth of knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, and mastery of scheduling, timelines and budgeting.
We are our clients’ advocates; it is our mission to safeguard their dreams and ensure project success.
We provide a positive platform of full disclosure, transparency, accountability, clear and concise communication, and quality assurance when engaging clients. To us, a new client isn’t just about building a project—it’s a chance to build a genuine, long-term relationship. Many of our past clients stay connected with us, both professionally and socially, years after their projects are completed.
We’ve developed an in-house comprehensive program based on industry best practices and building safety codes, encompassing every trade and aspect of the building process. Our system tracks and details situations, allowing us to effectively mitigate items needing attention, correction, or adjustment, ensuring every component of your project is completed to our high standards. Our daily site visits involve thoroughly inspecting progress, quality of workmanship, and building code compliance. We check, double-check, and verify. With multiple decades of experience enduring governing jurisdictional inspections on multi-million-dollar projects, we know what clients expect and demand. We have a solid command of code compliance and have added several additional high-end requirements to our standards based on our construction history.
For those clients who want to know the status of everything at any given time, we believe in complete transparency and sharing project information because it benefits everyone. If you’re curious about how our contractors’ quotes compare to the detailed information in our proposal, we’re happy to share these documents with you. Our open project records ensure no surprises: you’ll always know the actual budget assurances as they evolve, compare them with initial projections, make informed decisions, and add or remove parts of the scope of work at any time. Obviously, change orders can create deviations from the original budget tracking, but you will always know where the project budget stands.
Evolution and innovation have been integral components of our corporate success; we have consistently embraced both of these aspects throughout the past three decades. We are acutely aware of the common challenges owners experience when it comes to making decisions, committing to selections, deciding on change orders, understanding budgetary effects, and relying on a general contractor’s wisdom and advice. Most owners struggle with these topics or with how the effects of uncertainty and hesitation can adversely impact the project. Many contractors don’t recognize these issues as anything more than typical client problems and feel no compulsion to change their operations. This reflects a historical breakdown in the general contracting industry—not a fault of the owners, but an ignorance on the part of general contractors. Too many companies stick to outdated business models; we observe and act on our insights.
We recognize industry advancements and evaluate options to meet the growing need for high-efficiency practices, understanding how these improvements greatly benefit our clients. By implementing these options, we create an efficient, healthy environment with positive economic outcomes. Our continuous research allows us to create a superior product, maintain high standards, and stay current with our industry’s best practices.
We understand that not everyone can afford cutting-edge products or the latest technology. If you are a first-time owner or on a tight budget, we can adjust our services to fit your needs while still delivering excellent service, a top-quality product, and a great experience. Project cost levels only impact the scope of work; our quality and service remain high regardless of budget.
